Flights to Koh Phangan
There is no airport on the island just yet, so it is not possible to get direct flights to Koh Phangan. The nearest airports to Koh Phangan are located in Surat Thani and Koh Samui. Daily flights are available to both from Bangkok and Don Muang Airports. Flying is by far the quickest and most convenient way of getting to Koh Phangan when you arrive in Thailand or surrounding countries. Visitors who are arriving into Thailand on an international flight may need to fly into Bangkok first, then take a connecting flight with a low-cost airline to either Surat Thani Airport or Koh Samui Airport. However, some international flights are available direct to Koh Samui from South East Asian countries such as Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Once you arrive at Bangkok the cheapest way to fly is from Don Muang Airport to Surat Thani Airport. There are a couple of budget airlines operating from here making your journey that much quicker than by bus. Both Air Asia and Nok Air offer the lowest flight deals to Surat Thani Airport. This airport is very small with basic facilities so it’s not an airport you want to be waiting around too long. It then takes around 5 hours to get to Koh Phangan from Surat Thani Airport if you include the bus trip to the port and the ferry crossing.
If you are wanting a shorter journey then we recommend flying from Bangkok to Koh Samui. Koh Samui Airport is owned and managed by Bangkok Airways. This airport is small but is classified as an International Boutique Airport. Bangkok Airways offers several flights from Bangkok with flights taking about one hour. Koh Samui is also connected by direct flights from Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Thai Airways also offers twice daily flights from Bangkok.
Although the flight times from Bangkok Airport to Koh Samui Airport are similar to that of flying to Surat Thani Airport, the taxi and ferry transfer time to Koh Phangan is much less at only around 1 hour. Any flights to Koh Samui Airport can be expensive though, so if you are on a tight budget, fly to Surat Thani.
From both Surat Thani and Koh Samui airport you take a taxi, mini-van or bus directly to the ferry port to catch the next available boat to Koh Phangan. Some domestic flight companies include your bus and boat ticket with your air fare. If not then you can purchase ‘joint boat and bus’ tickets at the airport or at the ferry port yourself.
