Highest Point of the island with a 1.5 hr steep jungle climb
Khoa Ra, the highest point on Ko Phangan, is a total of 627 m in altitude. A tricky and sticky 1.5 hours climb, starting with dirt roads, changing half way to a steep incline of thick jungle, will bring you to the peak. Well worth to pain as the views are spectacular on a clear day, where the 360 degree view spreads across Chaloklum, Thong Nai Pan and neighboring Koh Tao and Koh Samui and sometimes even the mainland!
Location – Located centrally on the island.
Getting there – About 5 minutes’ drive from Thong Sala Pier, on the way to the north of the island. Then follow signs to Khao Ra Bungalows. You will leave the bike at the bottom and walk upwards towards the direction of the signposts, with ‘viewpoint’ written. You will stumble upon a bridge, on the left, which you walk over to go the the right way. Once this way, you will not get lost.
Distance – The path is very steep the close you get to the top and takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top.
Facilities – There is a small restaurant there, selling local Thai and western food.
Intensity – Fairly high, if you want to reach the top. However there are still viewpoints half way up the mountain. Bring your hiking boots.
